Great news - CrossFit’s Subject Matter Expert on Mobility, Kelly Starrett, just started a blog on Mobility!  He posts a daily “Mobility WOD”, that works on a separate area of the body.  We do mobility drills about 5 out of 7 days in our group warm-up, and we’ve had great results in the form of increased performance, and more importantly, reduced injury, since we introduced these protocols in February of this year.  Nearly all of these movements come from Kelly’s instruction on the CrossFit Journal, and I am not embarrassed to call them a junior version of what he prescribes here.

So here’s what we’re going to do, and here’s our September Challenge – we’re going to do Kelly’s Mobility WOD at the end of class 4 days a week in September.  The September Challenge is for you to also do his Mobility WOD every day.  How can I do this every day you ask?  Easy, Kelly conveniently posts videos and explanations each day so you can do it at home, or in your office, or in your cube, or at school.  This sounds like an arduous challenge, but I promise it’ll be less than 10 minutes a day, and the benefits of increased mobility make it worth the extra time – and a little extra pain.

A few logistical details – We’ll be one week behind, so for example tomorrow we’ll do his WOD from Wednesday, August 25. Make sense?  We’ll occasionally modify his WOD if we need to, but we’ll try to stick to the designated days so we don’t favor movements.  There will be a sign-up area on the GOALS/Warm-up whiteboard, kind of a pledge to give it a shot – who’s with me?

Mike – I haven’t heard anything for sure about the weekend with the cert going on are we still going to have any workouts?

Thanks for reminding me, updating site now with weekend schedule.

I am in for the challenge.

As I reviewed the site I saw this little homework assignment.

    2) My doctoral work was on adherence. I know you will make an excuse about not having 3 lacrosse balls and some jump stretch bands in a 7 days time. So don’t be that guy.
Go to Rogue and get a medium jump stretch band or two. Like Han Solo: You’re gonna need it.

This is fine for when we are in the gym but, if we are going to work this at home as well can you suggest a place to pick up an inexpensive band? Rogue seemed a bit pricy @ $45.00 for a pair. I don’t mind spending a few bucks to do stuff on my own time as well, but it would be nice to find a cheaper alternative or pair up with someone to split the cost.

Excellent question Seth, I’ll look into alternatives for bands. Many people like to use straps that don’t stretch instead of bands, so I’ll see what’s available, I might be able to make a bulk purchase if we have enough people and just recoup the cost of the items. We can definitely do this with lacrosse balls, they are very cheap at play it again sports as well if you want to just pick up a few.

Another low cost alternative to bands is to use bike tubes, these things work great, and most people have some of these lying around!

Love love love his stuff! I’m definitely in. Mike, I’m sure if you get some of the equipment, we’ll buy it from you.

I bought some cheap bands off of Amazon. They weren’t too bad. They had quite a few choices.
